Ketanji Brown Jackson

April 07, 2022 by Tesia Pennie

KBJ has been confirmed! I can’t believe I’m fortunate enough to see this historical moment. It amazes me how much the United States can feel so backwards and then we have a small progressive step. It’s exciting. I’m excited. I can’t wait to see how much this can help impact decisions and the Justice system for a more equitable/non racist stand point. Happy day to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the US Supreme Court 👩🏾‍⚖️

Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier

January 09, 2022 by Tesia Pennie

The new year is definitely starting off hard as fuck with the death of Betty White and now Sidney Poitier. He died January 6th at the of age 94 years old. Known for classics such as Guess who’s coming to Dinner (1967) and In the Heat of the Night (1967). Poitier paved the road for future Black actors. He made sure to show his own perception of himself without having white society create their own. He didn’t want to be a stereotype. He showed he could act on his own merits and he did it damn well. After acting he got into directing. Some of my favorite include Stir Crazy (1980) starring the amazing Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, not to mention at the time child favorite, Ghost Dad (1990) before we knew homeboy was on foul shit.

You will be missed and will forever be apart of something greater than all of us. It’s people from your generation that brought us hope. And we will continue that cycle. We will continue showing up for our people, our strengths, our faults, our truth, and most importantly ourselves. Thank you.

HARLEM: Season One

January 03, 2022 by Tesia Pennie

We are following the lives of four friends. Four friends who are all struggling, growing and learning from their mistakes. Or at least, they’re trying to.

Meet Camille (Megan Good) A professor at Columbia University who struggles balancing career and love. A misconception that we must choose. Camille refuses to settle especially after her last break up. While fighting for tenure at her job she must prove that she can be more than a social media activist. Will Camille find true love while proving She’s down for the count?

Meet Angie (Shoniqua Shadia) A free spirited Artist/Singer that used to be signed to a label to figuring out her next move while on her best friends couch. Angie is one of my favorite characters. She does not make herself small in any situation. Instead she knows her worth and won’t stop until she finds her journey and peace. Will Angie find her true passion? And possibly her own crib? Lol

Meet Tye (Jerrie Johnson) Tye is one of the youngest and first Black Queer techs who creates the first dating app for Queer BiPOCs. If you asked Tye, they would say they never settles for less. But with many secrets poppin up, will Tye finally embrace their true self? Or continue to be afraid of WHO she falls in love with?

Meet Quinn (Grace Byers) A struggling fashion designer, Quinn does her best with keeping her store a float. Even if it means asking her mother (The One and only Jasmine Guy) for money. Can Quinn prove to her mother she can be a successful designer? Or will she fold under the pressure?

Harlem is a true treasure. With resemblance to favorites like Girlfriends, ADW, and Insecure this is another Black T.V. Show that we need. The topics, the jokes, the relatable content just keeps hitting. I can’t wait for season 2 and I can’t wait to continue to watch the journey of these four wonderful women who continue to remind us, we can do anything. We just have to be there for each other!
Watch Harlem on Amazon Prime.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga

November 08, 2021 by Tesia Pennie

Its happened, Hulu finally gave us something precious. I haven’t been this happy since Netflix’s The Get Down (That sadly ended after 2 parts) and Love Craft Country ( THEY FUCKIN CHEATED US) but I digress. The Wu-Tang series is so fucking good. The cast is on point. They came correct!! Featuring the handsome and truly talented, Ashton Sanders, Shameik Moore (The Get Down), Siddiq Saunderson (Boomerang), Dave East (Rapper) and Bokeem Woodbine (Crooklyn, Juice). They also have the one and only Erika Alexander (Maxine from Living Single) who plays RZA’s mom.

3C4FEB39-8F73-4DE4-8294-E2976667818C.jpeg

This Hulu series has us follow Bobby (RZA). A young man that doesn’t realize he’s about to change the game forever. Bobby is that awkward Black kid who doesn’t necessarily give a shit about running no block. He lives and breathes music. Or at least that’s what it feels like. That’s what he wants to do. But sometimes, you don’t get to do the things you want.

Bobby is searching for something bigger. He’s been in the music scene and he understands how quickly it can fuck you. Homie is trying to do it better, and not just for him but his whole fucking crew. Generational fucking wealth, ya dig? This means gaining trust, creating a path and getting his friends to leave the streets alone. (Easier said than done when you’re the main provider.)

It’s a beautiful story about a group of friends fighting against all the system on all fronts. We know how it ends, but to see what Wu-Tang had to go through and experience to be the Wu-Tang they are just makes you appreciate the hustle even more. The series has been approved for their final season which I’m excited to see the characters react to a game we already know will last forever.

👐 FOREVER

Willow: lately I feel EVERYTHING

October 07, 2021 by Tesia Pennie

I wish this album came out when I was 14, weird Tesia would feel less alone and it would have been nice to see more representation. (Shout out to FeFe Dobson though) Willow continues to show how complex and versatile her creativity can be. Willow’s albums have truly evolved since ARDIPETHECUS (My favorite album so far still). She’s really shaping her image without compromising her ethics/and or morals. It’s been a wonderful ride witnessing her glow up.

@willowsmith

@willowsmith

lately I feel EVERYTHING is a wonderful pop punk album of honesty, angst and a sense of clarity. When listening to the album you can’t help but feel the energy and vibe from each song. Willow really draws you in, you can feel the joy bursting out of her. My favorite tracks of the album are: T R A N S P A R E N T S O U ft. Travis Barker. They both really compliment each other on this track. Willow’s vocals almost drown you and Barker’s drums wrap around you. NAIVE: I love the slow bummy chill house sound it gives. But it makes you wonder was this just a song or does Willow feel that she indeed is Naïve? I mean sometimes people can be out of touch when they have money. But lets keep it real, we all have that one friend that doesn’t know what’s going on in the world unless it has something to do with them. GROW ft. Avril Lavigne & Travis Barker. First off, How fucking cool is it to have a childhood favorite like Avril Lavigne in you album. (Even though Willow is probably too young to even remember her classics lol) I enjoyed this happy positive track. It’s fun and easy to dance too.

All in All this was a good album, I wouldn’t say my favorite, something still felt amiss. But with that being said I can’t wait to see what comes next. I forget how young Willow is and how much she’s already accomplished, too excited for the future.

DOECHII : Oh The Places You’ll Go

August 26, 2021 by Tesia Pennie

Doechii is fun and exciting. She makes you want more and more. In each track she keeps surprising you by giving a little more of herself. She isn’t giving you a brand. This is her. This is her story.

My favorite Track from the album is Yuckly Blucky Fruitcake. Her story telling reminds me of a young Childish Gambino. Her sound is distinctive. Her creativity in writing is outstanding. She’s has many dimensions to her craft. The track, What’s Your Name is a banger! It gives that club/ballroom vibe and personally, makes me want to actually go inside a club and dance with that song on repeat. (But covid) so my room will have to do.

She already has three albums/EPs under her belt including, 2019’s Coven Music Session Vol.1 and this years BRA-LESS that included her 2018 single Girls.

I AM DOECHII is killing the game and I’m here for all of it. Check her out on Spotify and YouTube @iamdoechii

Annie is fucking back and not taking shit from anyone, including fuck boys that don’t deserve her time. It starts off with Annie having a fun casual date with what she learns sooner than later is a man child. Even though dating isn’t going that well she still kicking ass at work.
Until, she decided to pick up a story about a right wing domestic terrorist group of fucks that live out in the boonies. After writing her article that she thought would give her praise she ends up getting canceled. Of course, Annie feeling like the victim gets advice from bestie Fran that lets her know, she truly fucked up by giving these people a platform in the first place and the fact that she was able to write the article and meet these people, was because she is a white woman.

@shrillhulu

@shrillhulu

Trying to figure out work, and how to fix everything Annie gets set up with a guy who she assumed she was set up with because they are both fat. Not realizing how much internalized fat shaming she had within, she completely becomes a rude and horrible date. She later realizes she didn’t give Will a proper chance and actually does like the guy and they begin a somewhat serious relationship.

@shrillhulu

@shrillhulu

Annie is not the only one, Fran is also in a relationship with EM, who is amazing and loving and wants to begin growing their relationship with Fran. But can Fran take it to the next level? Can Annie and Fran realize that sometimes it’s not the other people, but themselves that have to grow the fuck up and do the work?

July 28, 2021 by Tesia Pennie

First off, I’m so glad A Black Lady Sketch Show got their second season and they came through with the opening credits, depicting their version of A Different World!! I am a huge ADW fan so I was too hyped about it.

@blackladysketchshow

@blackladysketchshow

We also have a couple new faces, including Skye Townsend (8 Days a Week), the daughter of Robert Townsend, the amazing director and actor of films such a BAPS, Parenthood and Meteor Man!

@blackladysketchshow

@blackladysketchshow

Laci Mosley who Played in the hilarious TV show, Florida Girls and is also in the new reboot of iCarly.

@blackladysketchshow

@blackladysketchshow

A Black Lady Sketch Show begins where they left off. It’s the end of the world and the gang ends up in a house stocked up with everything they need to survive. But even though they have shelter the women start questioning each other and wondering if they actually know the company they keep. The new series keeps us laughing with another sketch of Black Lady courtroom but this time with a twist! A BLACK LADY JURY! Can you even imagine? What a different world we would live in, and maybe have some true justice coming out our courtrooms. We also have see the Coral Reef Gang back in action but this time at a much needed work retreat. Season two is just as hilarious as season one and I can’t wait to see what else these incredible woman have to offer in season 3.
