Sidney Poitier
The new year is definitely starting off hard as fuck with the death of Betty White and now Sidney Poitier. He died January 6th at the of age 94 years old. Known for classics such as Guess who’s coming to Dinner (1967) and In the Heat of the Night (1967). Poitier paved the road for future Black actors. He made sure to show his own perception of himself without having white society create their own. He didn’t want to be a stereotype. He showed he could act on his own merits and he did it damn well. After acting he got into directing. Some of my favorite include Stir Crazy (1980) starring the amazing Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, not to mention at the time child favorite, Ghost Dad (1990) before we knew homeboy was on foul shit.
You will be missed and will forever be apart of something greater than all of us. It’s people from your generation that brought us hope. And we will continue that cycle. We will continue showing up for our people, our strengths, our faults, our truth, and most importantly ourselves. Thank you.
